“The high from these things can last for a day, if even, or maybe a few minutes. But I’m looking for more internal stability even if the external is unpredictable.”
YMMV, but I’ve found the best answers to the questions you’re asking can come from nothing to do with the work, and sometimes a hard reset can help, though I know this isn’t always possible.
Your reflections really brought me back to a certain time and place and collection of people in my life, and gave me gratitude for the distance I’ve put between myself and parts of the industry - even as I’ll still sometimes participate. This isn’t to say I won’t sometimes struggle with it, I definitely do. But degree and frequency have greatly diminished with that distance.
I think you’re right - I know a lot of folks who are still in the industry BUT aren’t embedded into the social network of it helps them to stay distanced and focused on the work!
This was such an important read, thank you for sharing with us. And for the shoutout too!
It can be exhausting to think about the emotional whirlwind that is freelancing, but also so liberating to interrogate them like you've done here. I also hope to get better at not letting external forces be my guide, and rather to look within 💖
aww. thank you for sharing Hannah. I know it's not easy but I appreciate the honesty. I think we all feel the jealousy creeping up no matter what field of work we are in (or even outside of the workspace). I love how you mention you don't want external forces to be your guide. It's a good reminder (and one that we often need).
